Canberra Man Guilty of Driving Illegally

A 50-year-old self-employed Canberra man has plead guilty to driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle with a suspended license.

Christopher John Powell drove past police officers on Stuart Street in Griffith on the 24th of June at 9:10pm when his car came back us unregistered.

Police pulled him over and found the car was also uninsured, and that Powell was driving on a suspended license.

Powell told the court that the Honda Jazz belonged to his then flat mate, and he was unaware that it was both uninsured and unregistered.

The vehicle had been unregistered for seven months.

Magistrate Bernadette Boss, who presided over the case, asked what had caused Powell to drive when he knew his license was suspended.

“My circumstances were that I had to get to my son, and I made a bad call,” Powell said.

The Honourable Boss asked Powell to discuss his current situation where he disclosed he now lives alone, and that he runs his own business.

The Honourable Boss told Powell that she had taken into account his age and personal circumstances when deciding the verdict.

Powell was fined $500 for driving an uninsured vehicle, $600 for driving with a suspended license, $170 in various court costs, and was disqualified from holding a license for one month.

Powell was given three months to pay.
